January Meeting - Carving Contest

posted Jan 10, 2010 7:50 AM by Derek Price

We are planning a carving competition for our meeting in February. Whoever wants to participate will be given a piece of wood (same size & type) at the January meeting and the winner will be the one who comes up with the most unique and well carved project to show us at the February meeting. It should be a lot of fun, so get your thinking caps on and come up with a unique idea to carve!

December Meeting - Party Recap

posted Jan 10, 2010 7:46 AM by Derek Price

Last Month’s Meeting: We would like to thank everyone for making our annual Club Christmas party such a great success. We had wonderful food brought by our good members. Mary and Jim cooked the turkeys and Susan cooked the ham. Jay Thomas sang 2 beautiful songs for us and talked to us about the special meaning of Christmas. Also, Don Schiffman did a reading for us which we all enjoyed. We had our usual woodcarving display and contest and our winner was Tim Higginson with three beautiful spoons he had intricately chip carved. We had our usual laughs and outbursts with the gift exchange and all seemed to be happy and satisfied by the end of the night. We owe a special thanks to Jeanette Brown for setting this up and making sure this all went ok.

As you know, at each club meeting we have a drawing for door prizes. Each member in attendance receives 1 free ticket. We are going to spice things up a bit starting at our January meeting! If you wear a name tag that you have carved, you’ll get 1 extra ticket. Also, if you wear your club vest &/or hat (which are still available for purchase) then you’ll get an extra ticket! So remember to wear your club vest, hat and your carved name tag & increase your chances of winning one of our cool door prizes!! ☺

Christmas Ornament Update

posted Dec 20, 2009 8:14 AM by Derek Price   [ updated Dec 20, 2009 8:33 AM ]

Look at the beautiful tree our club helped decorate by carving and painting approximately 40 or so ornaments. You are all to be commended for your part in helping Primary Children’s Hospital. Hopefully the tree will sell for a good amount and that will help Primary Children’s. Thank you and thank you from the Salt Lake Club also!

One of our members noticed there was no mention on the card in front of the tree that our club helped with the tree. I emailed Marilyn Ure and she explained that they thought they were on top of it, but the Festival printed the cards like the original registration, which at that point, our club wasn’t involved. Their club and I, am sorry about this year, and will make sure that next year, all the clubs that participate will be listed, and will be registered as such.

New Club President Elected

posted Dec 20, 2009 8:11 AM by Derek Price

Also, at last month’s meeting after a unanimous vote, Mary Dame was elected to be our new Club President. Mary will choose two Vice Presidents, Secretary, Treasurer and other officers to serve with her for the next two years.

Our outgoing Club President, Susan Hendrix, had this to say “I would like to express my complete confidence in our newly elected President, Mary Dame. I am grateful and want to thank each person who helped me administer the club affairs during the last 2 years. You are all wonderful, awesome individuals with a desire to continue to make our club better. I admire your willingness to pitch in and help whenever there is a need. I won’t list all your names because I may inadvertently miss someone, but you know who you are. Thank you and I know you and I will all put our full support behind Mary and give her our time and talents to use”.

On that note, I think I speak on behalf of all club members when I say that we would like to thank Susan for all of her hard work and dedication to the Club. She has spent many, many hours these last two years organizing meetings and events for the club. She has introduced carving to many new members and has shared her love of carving with young & old at club events. She has done so much to promote our club and “get our name out there”. She is a very talented lady and we are lucky to have her in our club and have her share her time and talents with us! Thank you Susan for all you do! ☺

Club Christmas Party

posted Dec 20, 2009 8:08 AM by Derek Price

Our Annual Christmas Party and Social will again be held December 10th at 6:00 pm at the Mt. Nebo Jr. High School in Payson (in the Faculty Room). The address is 851 West 450 South in Payson, Utah. Take the 800 South Exit (the Wal-Mart Exit), then go east to 800 West (Payson Baseball Park) turn Left, go North 4 ½ blocks and the school is on the left. Enter at the far North/East door.

We will have a gift exchange again this year. If you, your spouse or children want to participate, bring a gift of a carved item, a carving related item, or in the case of a non-carver, you may bring a non-carving related item, to exchange. Each person who brings a gift will receive a gift. We will keep the price for each gift in the $5 to $15 range so everyone can participate. Wrap the gift, but don’t put your name on them and we’ll play a little game. This party should be a lot of fun so bring your family and join us for the celebration!! We will also be having a Christmas Carving Display, so bring something new that you’ve not displayed before. We’ll vote on our favorite carving and give out a $15 gift certificate to Treeline (from the Club) to the carving that receives the most votes. Last year we even had a few extra prizes so come and be surprised. Who knows, you might be a winner!

The Club will furnish the Ham and Turkey and ice. We would like everyone to help with the food by bringing something to share. We would like people with last names, beginning with A-G: Please bring a salad of any kind or a veggie tray, olives, etc.; H-N: Please bring a dessert of any kind; O-Z: Please bring a casserole of Au Gratin type potatoes. Also, a few members will be called and asked to bring rolls and butter. This party is for Club members and their families. We also would like to invite members from the Salt Lake, Logan, Ogden, and Bountiful clubs to bring some eats and join us if you like. The party chairwoman this year is Jeanette Brown (Thanks Jeanette!). Please call her at 435-623-5910 for questions or offers to help set up, tear down or to help in any other way. Hope to see you all there!

November Meeting Update

posted Dec 20, 2009 8:06 AM by Derek Price

During November's meeting, Don Orme showed us how to cut a carving blank on a band saw. He said that he makes a copy of the pattern (from the carving book/magazine). If it is a pattern that he is going to use several times, he traces the pattern onto a piece of cardboard and then cuts it out and uses it to trace the pattern onto the wood (in pencil). He also makes stop cuts in several places so there will be an “escape route” for the blade. Don is making about 40 large snowmen and about 10 Nativity sets to give to his neighbors and family for Christmas gifts this year. We’d all like to be his neighbor! ☺
